From April 2022, a new tax on plastic packaging will be in place in the UK. So, what does this mean for you and your business and what steps should you be taking now?

Many of us are already making efforts to reduce our plastic use, and the UK government has now taken steps to ensure manufacturers and importers of plastic packaging are now doing their bit, by introducing a new plastic packaging tax (PPT). The aim of this is to reduce new plastics and increase plastic recycling.

Who or what will be affected by this tax?

PPT will be levied on plastic packaging that contains less than 30% recycled plastic. Any packaging where plastic is the heaviest component will be classed as ‘plastic packaging’.

‘Greener’ plastics such as biodegradable and compostable plastics will still incur PPT – although this is currently being reviewed by the government.

There are some exemptions to PPT. This is where plastic packaging is for the following use:

  • As transport packaging importing goods into the UK for example, packaging to secure the safe transit of goods.
  • With licensed human medicines
  • In aircraft, ship or railway stores for goods moving through the UK.

How much is PPT?

The rate of PPT will be £210.82 per metric tonne of plastic packaging (that contains less than 30% of recycled plastic) from April 2023

Does this apply to everyone?

Yes, potentially. From the largest plastic packaging manufacturer to an individual consumer buying goods in plastic packaging may see the effects. The PPT will be levied on manufacturers and importers that manufacture or import ten or more metric tonnes of plastic packaging per year. The cost may well be passed along the supply chain to the end-consumers.

How can I move away from plastics?

There are many products available now that are just as good as plastic packaging in terms of their functionality but contain more than 30% recycled plastic. Paper packaging options can offer a fantastic alternative and the move from plastic to paper has never been easier.

What is important is to ensure you are prepared for the implementation of the PPT. If you would like to talk to one of our experienced team on how you can make simple changes to ensure you do not get stung by the new plastic tax.
